In the real world

Ray diagrams represent an extended object with a recognizable shape so that image position, orientation, and magnification can be compared. A converging lens can form a real inverted image or a virtual upright image depending on object distance.

In OpticalSetup

Choose an arrow, letter F, or tree, set its height, and enable the image marker. The optional ray fan originates at the object's on-axis anchor; it is not a full collection of rays from every point of the shape. The paraxial image marker is calculated separately.

The example places an object 200 mm before a 100 mm lens. Its paraxial image appears 200 mm beyond the lens with equal size and inverted orientation. Move the lens to explore magnification and virtual images.

Simplified vs. reality

The image marker does not account for downstream clipping or represent a rendered camera image. The model does not calculate diffraction, image texture, or radiometric brightness across the object.
